More about this scene
The castle is seen here in its romantic ruin phase, which lasted from 1777 until around 1911. It was built in the 1440s after Sir Roger Fiennes was granted a royal licence to crenellate (that is, build a battlemented house) using locally- made brick, and it is now a beautiful mellow red. In the 1770s the interior was removed to build Herstmonceux Place a mile away. After 1911 the castle was restored, including the re-excavation of the filled-in moats.
