More about this scene

The castle is seen here in its romantic ruin phase, which lasted from 1777 until around 1911. It was built in the 1440s after Sir Roger Fiennes was granted a royal licence to crenellate (that is, build a battlemented house) using locally- made brick, and it is now a beautiful mellow red. In the 1770s the interior was removed to build Herstmonceux Place a mile away. After 1911 the castle was restored, including the re-excavation of the filled-in moats. Herstmonceux  Re. Hailsham Rd 1965 Photo
Good to see the photo of Herstmonceux in 1965 along Hailsham Rd. I was born outside the village in 1957, my father being the local Reverend from 1956 till 1973/4. The old car in the foreground was right outside the large village school and the tin building on the left was part of the village hall.  Further along on the right was the local garage with showroom, owned by the big "Caffyns" ...see more

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
