More about this scene
This is the east end of the church. In the 1870s the churchyard became quite literally full up, and in consequence Admiral Chaloner gave a site on the eastern outskirts of the town for use as a cemetery. Thereafter, the only interments in the churchyard were those of family members into existing family graves. For ease of maintenance, the headstones no longer mark the positions of the graves and now stand in uniform rows. The churchyard contains some significant tabletop tombs, and also a memorial to John Walker Ord, author of 'Ord's History of Cleveland', regarded for many years as the definitive history of the Cleveland area. This view shows clearly the vestry block (to the right of the chancel) which was added in the 1880s.
