More about this scene
Wellington Gardens is styled in the classical manner, with a domed bandstand reminiscent of St Paul's. Here the fashionable promenaded. The Winter Gardens to the left have been compared to a giant greenhouse where summer could be enjoyed the year long. The intention was clearly to create a holiday fantasy, worlds away from the grime and slog of city life. Beyond is the mid-Victorian Wellington Pier, since considerably refashioned.
