More about this scene
Admiral George Anson, born here in 1697, commanded the HMS 'Centurion' on a voyage around the world between 1740 and 1744. Although many hundreds died, they captured a large Spanish treasure ship in the Pacific Ocean, from which Anson made his fortune. After his return he became First Lord of the Admiralty and carried out numerous naval reforms. On his death in 1762, his brother, Thomas, inherited his wealth and used some of it to enlarge the family house and landscape the grounds.
