Gloucester, Cathedral Crypt 1891

More about this scene
The crypt contains clear differences in its building style. The original design proved too weak to carry the weight imposed upon it. Ealdred, Bishop of Worcester, was involved in the initial construction in the mid 11th century, and it is probable that Serlo, Abbot of Gloucester from 1072, did the strengthening work. The Norman masons' marks are clear to see.
