Nostalgic memories of Gateshead's local history

Share your own memories of Gateshead and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Born in 1949 and living in Milling Street was the happiest and safest childhood you could wish for. My Gran and Grandad, Billy and Jessie Gibbons, lived in the same street. My name then was Ann Roberts and I went to Rose Street school and Vine Street Mission with Sister Winifred and Sister Kay. My Great Grandmother, Mary Dodd, also lived in the street and various uncles and aunties. I am so grateful ...see more
I would love to see any photos of Halls little shop in Pensher Street, Old Fold or the coal merchants Leslie Wakes' yard in the Back Lane. So many happy memories, if anybody has any I would walk over broken glass to get them and scan them. Thanks, Joe.
Can anyone remember or does anyone have pictures of Susie's Fish Shop on Askew Road? The - period would be 1950's thereabouts; my nana and grandad owned it and I would love to know a bit more about it.
I just got a personal message from Pat McLaren/Jim Munday, but didn't have the sense to reply immediately and now I've 'lost' it. We are related and I have lots of Census records, birth records which I'd like to share with you. You mentioned being related to Robert Hall and Violet Adelaide (Wales) of Sheriff Hill - they were my grandparents. I was born and raised in Sheriff Hill. My e-mail is rhall36@aol.com and I ...see more
I attended Brighton Ave. and left in 1959. I had three teachers, the first was Mr ( Basher) Bennet, the second was Mr. Thompson and the third was Mr. Lewis. I was one of Harry Botcherby's specials and can state for certain that there was nothing going on other than him trying to educate us up to GCE standard. I had extra homework (at my parents insistence) and therefore was often alone with HB ...see more
John Kinniburgh - my memories of Gateshead are all good ones. I lived in Gateshead from 1946 -1958 then moved to Essex. I was born in a house at 3 Ashgrove Terrace, near Saltwell Park and then moved to 11 St Cuthberts Terrace. I enjoyed those years very much as I have enjoyed all my life. Dad worked hard in the ship yards and provided well for me and my sister Ann. I remember the Coronation street ...see more
I am writing this memory on behalf of my late mother. She has lived in Sheffield since the age of 30. All of her good memories of Gateshead was the swimming baths. She was not very academic and she constantly told me how often she was caned at school. However she loved swimming and was in the school team. I wonder if any one could tell me where the swimming baths in Gateshead would be in the late 1930's. I ...see more

Does anyone have photos of Shipcote School Deckham, now demolished. A small housing estate was built within the original wall, that is still standing. My email address. sheilaerrington@hotmail.co.uk. The school was demolished sometime in the 1980s I believe.
Just read a memory of standing outside the factories of Clark Chapmans and asking if anyone had any bait left. I did the same myself, it brought back powerful memories of living in Southey Street until I was 11 years old. My father has just passed away at 88, he worked in Clark Chapmans. Just another thought, can anyone remember the gas explosion that demolished a house near the bottom of the street? We got our bonfire wood from there for a few years. Email:murr.a@hotmail.com
