More about this scene
Deckchairs and beach tents were available for hire, and the donkeys are saddled to take different age groups. The harp and the clown-like costumes are in fact the tell-tale signs that a Pierrot seaside concert party is touting for customers. Pierrot were in vogue right up to the Second World War, and their origins go back to the London success of the mime play 'L'Enfant Prodigue' staged in 1891.
