More about this scene
Judging by the crowd gathering on the beach, it looks as though a seaside concert party will shortly be giving a performance. Pierrot troupes were popular from the early 1890s, almost up to the outbreak of the Second World War. They dressed in clown-like costumes and their show consisted of songs, jokes and monologues.
