In the distance is Martello Tower Q, built in 1808-10 as a defence against French invasion. The nearest building was the Anchorage, which had been extended in 1891 by adding the section with balconies and the unusually-angled gable end. In 1907 it was extended again and became St Mary's Children's Home. In the street the carriages ply their trade, while the postman delivers letters.
