More about this scene
The gateway on the right, facing the Eynsford Castle Inn, leads to the ruins of the Norman castle which was the property of William of Eynsford. In 1163 he became involved in a dispute with Archbishop Thomas Becket over the appointment of a local priest. Henry II supported William in his case, but after Becket's martyrdom at Canterbury, he was so filled with remorse that he left the castle and entered a monastery.
