Egremont, From The Sands 1895

More about this scene
Playing on the sands seems to be an enjoyment forgotten today, but here these youngsters certainly seem to be enjoying themselves on Egremont beach. The area was never as commercial as its sister New Brighton, but it was still a popular holiday destination. The black-and-white timbered building on the left of the picture is Old Mother Redcap's Inn, steeped in history, with stories of shipwrecks, sailor's gold and smugglers. It was pulled down in the 1970s, but they say that there is gold buried somewhere round here, and Old Mother Redcap's ghost still haunts the area.
