A train belonging to the North Eastern Railway is about to ease out onto the great viaduct, built by Robert Stephenson in 1857, that carries the line 100 ft above the streets of Durham. The North Eastern had two other stations serving Durham. Elvet closed in 1931 to passenger traffic, but remained open for goods until January 1954. Gilesgate closed to passengers in April 1857 but survived for goods traffic until November 1966.

Not Built By Robert Stephenson.
The viaduct that strides across Durham City was completed in 1856 and was open initially to goods (freight traffic) in the August of that year, the line had failed a safety inspection with regards to the working of passenger trains and did not open to passengers until 1/4/1857. The route and the viaduct was designed by Thomas E. Harrison and was constructed by Richard Cail of Gateshead.

Durham Cathedral
My granddad and nana, Lydia and Alan Field, lived in the house under the arches to the Cathedral. He was the porter and I remember helping him ring the bell in the cathedral. His office or Lodge as we called it, was opposite the house. It was filled with stuffed animals. Arrival In Durham
This the view one saw when arriving in Durham by train from Kings Cross, but nowadays most of the little houses between the station and the city have vanished. The heart of the city lies in a horseshoe-shaped bend in the River Wear, and on the left in the picture is the Castle, and on the right the Norman Cathedral, both of which were part of my life when I attended Durham University from 1956-1959. First Memory Of Durham
My first memories of Durham is being taken be my aunty Audrey and uncle Alan. They had instructions to buy my sister and I a tartan skirt from the market. I remember having a boat ride on the river Wear. Durham is my 'Tara', the place where I need to return to to get my inner peace restored.

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
