More about this scene

The scene on the right of the photograph is virtually unrecognisable today. All the buildings have been demolished on that side, and the road curving round (Buckwell Street) is now a cul-de-sac. The old Town Cross/milestone still stands on its original site, and a row of shops has been built behind it. The left-hand side of the High Street, however, is virtually the same as it is here, with the George Hotel on the corner of Station Road.

In our school holidays I used to go fishing and swimming down the brook below Pioneer Ave, that's where I lived, number 19 Pioneer. We moved to Windsor Ave in 1978. I used to knock about with Simon Loake, Barry Goodman, Dean Underwood, John and James Twelvetree. We also used to roam the allotments and the surrounding fields, armed with catapaults and our pockets full of stones. Towards the end of the 6 week hols the ...see more
