More about this scene
London Road, as the name implies, was the turnpike from London; it climbs up to the Wheat Sheaf, one of several coaching inns in Daventry. The coaching trade caused Daventry to become a leading centre for the manufacture of whips. It is believed that the tall Wellingtonia trees on the right-hand side of the road were planted to commemorate the birth of the children of the Burton family. It is a member of the same family that is commemorated by the Burton Memorial.
