Two Year Student At Cheshire County Training College Crewe

A Memory of Crewe.

It was an all-ladies' college when I attended. Many friendships were made. Memories of teaching practices at schools in Crew and surrounds. First year students had to go out in "digs" and were able to live in the Hall of Residence during the second year. The second Hall of Residence was built during the year 1956. Every Wednesday evening was formal dinner and we had turns in escorting a lecturer to dinner and had to dress appropriately. It was difficult during the first year as a student, getting back to our digs within a certain timeframe to get changed for dinner.
We had to be a member of two societies and attend meetings regularly. This was on top of our workload of having to make all our materials required for school practice, no photocopiers in those days, and doing assignments for main subjects. During the first year we would get up early and after breakfast walk two to three miles to college carrying everything needed for the day. Activities finished in time for dinner at 7pm then it was a walk back to our digs and complete any assignments required for the next day. During the second year, we would often be doing assignments in our own rooms until 2am. Boyfriends were welcome but not allowed in students' rooms. There was a small dining room that could be booked for tea if you wished to have a bit more privacy :) How things have changed over the years!!
