More about this scene
The original parish church was at Astbury, but the building of this one in the 1740s reflected the growth of importance of Congleton as a result of its silk industry at that period. The stone tower was added some forty years later. The cobbles on the road in the foreground have gone, and the trees have grown more, but otherwise this view is little changed.
