More about this scene
Designed be Borough Surveyor Charles Clegg, the 100ft building was opened amid greate civic pomp in 1882. Like the town hall tower, it dominates for miles around, and is also in a monumental Baroque style. The pond is now replaced be the uncompromisingly modern Mercury Theatre, built in 1972.
