More about this scene
Colchester is often described as Britain's oldest recorded town - this was a town of vital importance to the Romans. In this photograph Charles Brown & Sons advertise the sale of linoleum, rugs, floorcloth, mats and matting. A workman digging a hole in the road attracts the attention of mothers who pause with their prams. The timber-framed building close to the bridge is known as the Old Siege House.
