More about this scene

Cockerham, the village, and Cockersands, the Abbey, both take their names from the River Cocker, which runs between them. Cockerham today is not actually on the river, which runs across the large Cockerham Moss. In the Domesday Book it is written as 'Cocreham'. The original village was burnt down in the 1600s and had to be completely rebuilt. The villagers left the burnt-out village and moved on to the main road, around the Manor Inn, seen here in our photograph.
