Clee Hill, Cornbrook Bridge 1911

More about this scene
Standing 533 metres above sea level, this hill is made up of a stone known as dhustone (from the Welsh word 'dhu', meaning black). The sides are covered with the remains of bell pits, ancient open-cast mines where people have dug for coal since the 13th century. Down below at the foot of the hill, the wind blowing off the summit on a cold day can make the village of Clee seem bleak.
