Take away the motor cars and we have a good idea of how an affluent wool town would have looked during the 14th and 15th centuries. Grevel House, in nearby Grevel Street, belonged to the prosperous wool merchant William Grevel, supposedly the model for the merchant in Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'.

My grandparents lived in the Almshouses, not sure which one first, but certainly No4 and then later they moved to No12 - this is the house and window which is featured in the photo.
