More about this scene
During the Napoleonic Wars, Chesterfield and Ashbourne accommodated French prisoners. Allowed out during the day, the prisoners at Chesterfield were summoned back to quarters by the ringing of a curfew bell from St Mary's. This bell was also known as the pancake bell, and used to be rung on Shrove Tuesday to call parishioners to their annual confession.
