More about this scene
This footbridge, now gone, went across the river Marden from the footpath to the left, and led into a bungalow which was situated on what is now Somerfield's car park. Dr Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), who was librarian and tutor to the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne at Bowood, identified oxygen in 1774 and is commemorated here by a plaque.
