More about this scene
We are looking south from Lower Gatesgarth. The pines of Crag Wood are prominent in the centre of the photograph, while the slopes of Dodd sweep up the lake shore beyond. Buttermere and Crummock Water were once a single large lake, until alluvium from Sail Beck gradually cut it in two.
