This photograph was taken three years after Avonmouth, Portishead and the city docks were brought under Corporation control. Bristol's two principal shipping companies were the Bristol Steam Navigation, founded in 1836 to take advantage of the Irish trade, and the Bristol City Lines, who were both owners and builders, with routes to South America and the East.
