Boston Manor Zebras

A Memory of Brentford.

Opposite Boston Manor station is an office block. Before this was built it was waste land called by us kids BOSTON BUMPS. We had bikes with cow horn handle bars and painted the frames black and white and called ourselves the ZEBRAS. We used to meet there and do all sorts of extreme riding over the track we had worn in the ground. This was in the fifties. The headmaster at Bordeston school banned any ZEBRA bike from being ridden to school such was discipline in those far off days.

Hi Nick I remember the bumps, watching the lads do tricks on their bikes and standing my ground when one rode close to me. The handlebar caught my arm and he fell off. Not best pleased he marched over and hit me. Was he a zebra wearing a purple shirt ? Never forget the incident but all part of growing up.
I've gone as far as I can Nick trying to find Nina. I am now lost and so why don't you tell Nina to contact me direct. I would love to talk to her but can't find out how for the life of me. Hi old Hanwellians, take care everyone and keep safe. Love, Sandy x
Hi Sandy, I do hope you get this message. I've often wondered how you are as I remember you and your lovely mum and dad with much affection. I'm in Littlehampton and enjoying life by the sea. Just celebrated my 74th birthday. I've enjoyed chatting to Nick about our memories of Hanwell so hopefully we can catch up now. Nina
Nina! How lovely to read your message. I have very poor memories of our time together but I do have a picture of us on I think it was our confirmation day. Hanwell has changed so much that I can't recall how it was except that the community was very strong. I believe there is probably no community at all now as we knew it. I was a Sunday School teacher for a couple of years and my lovely Dad was the Leader. I had a terrible crush on John Bennett, that much I do remember and would love to know what happened to him. I live in Princes Risborough now after 36 years of an unhappy marriage I lost my husband in January of this year. I remember a lass called Elizabeth and a really nice boy called Richard Jenkin who I think married a girl called Lin who was a real pain to me when I was teaching, she would constantly talk and I couldn't concentrate on what I was doing. Don't laugh I kept on putting her outside the classroom. Desperate measures, well she was 13 and I was 15, we didn't have a hope did we! Do come back to me and remind me of other things, I suspect your memories are better than mine. I loved Littlehampton when I was young and did have a friend at one time living in a very pleasant bungalow. I would love to live by the sea but am stuck here for the moment and maybe will not leave as my health is not too good. Look forward to hearing from you. Love, Sandy x
