Memories Of Bredbury

A Memory of Bredbury.

I was actually born in Hyde in 1939 but moved to Bredbury in 1940 where Dad worked at Exors of James Mills until his retirement in the sixties. We lived at 5, Newlyn Drive off Bents Lane and I lived there until my marriage in 1966 when wife Julia and I bought a new build bungalow on Powick Drive, Bredbury Green. Think we were about second to occupy on this new estate. We moved to Denton during the very hot summer of 1976 ( my wife was a Denton girl ) , I was a member of Denton Golf Club until we did the big move in 1984 to North Cornwall just outside Padstow where we have lived since. I went to Bredbury County Primary school until going on to Audenshaw Grammar school in 1951. My sister, 9 years younger also went to same B.C.P.S then went on to Marple Grammar. Remember the war years when the Germans were trying to bomb the steelworks and of course we lived adjacent.Fortunately they didn't get it and only dropped incenderies but we used to shelter in the pantry under the stairs and sometimes in the cellar of the Burgess family next door. Mr Burgess was the cobbler who had the little shop almost opposite Newlyn Drive on Bents Lane backing on to Partington's farm. Remember I got my 25 yrd swimming cert at school, we used to use Marple baths. Vivid memories of the freedom we had as kids in those days. May not have had many posessions as kids these days have but boy, I reckon we had much better childhoods depite all the deprevavations right up to the fifties. Holidays saw us out from dawn to dusk, on the boats on the canal, cycling the towpath up to Marple locks, roaming Werneth Low and goodness knows what else. Winter building our own toboggans and sliding down Star Fields off George Lane. Before the steelworks was extended, there were allotments behind our house and we used to go through and sneak over the railway lines ( top line to Hayfield and bottom line to London ) to get to the football ground at the Wallpaper Mfrs. One day a copper cycling over Redhouse Lane bridge spotted us and sneaked round via Highfield Avenue and caught us happily having a kick around. Took us to George Lane police station and fightened the life out of us. Remember policeman were minimum of 6 ft + a helmet in those days and were giants and respected by us little scruffs. Suppose looking back we were a right bunch of nogoods by today's standards but we never did anything malicious or caused damage. I was also in the Scouts at Haverlow and used to roam about in Chadkirk woods, seems we did a lot of roaming in those days.Thursday night was scout night and on way home used to call for a fourpenny mix ( with fishbits ) at what we called Greasy Annies, on Berrycroft Road. Run by two spinster sisters who were aunts of a mate also in the scouts. It later became a fine chippy, think it was Ray's place and now believe it's called Matts Plaice. Used to fancy his sister Marjorie who was a little bit older but never got anywhere. Don't know anyone who lives in the area these days, my parents of course dead for some years and know one or two friends have moved away, such as cousin Colin Ford who lived on Queens Rd. Hope anyone connected with Bredbury and district enjoys my rabbiting. Cheers from Cornwall.. Terry Butcher.

Remember it well Terry, I am sure I worked with your dad at the Steelworks in the Laboratory. Nice chap, regards Pete Howard
Hi Terry, I think you must know my sister, she was best friends with Marjorie who was her bridesmaid. I went to school with your sister, Val. We later worked at Bredbury Steel Works where I had a spell working with your dad. I remember sledging at Star Fields. Love to hear from you. Pete Howard
Nice to hear from you Pete. Can't recall your sister could have been a different age group. Margorie was year or maybe two older than me..must have had an older woman complex! Val has lived in Surrey for many years. Will mention you when we next speak. Cheers.
Nice to hear from you Terry, whenever I pass Leonards shop on Bent's Lane a fleeting memory of The steelworks comes to mind. In my mind I can see the old chap in the shop, now sitting on a stool behind the counter sucking on his sweets. The steelworks offices were in the old building of Ward's Hat works before the modern office block was built. My dad used to frequent the Social club next to the slaughterhouse. I remember going to the kids Christmas parties there. I was friendly with Dennis Brown, Marjorie's brother, they used to live opposite us on Highfield Avenue. Their dad, Harry Brown was the blacksmith who had the forge at the bottom of George Lane. I live in Poynton now but I do go to Romiley occasionally and more often to Marple which seems to survive without too much change. a couple of days ago I was held up at the traffic lights at Barrack Hill (opposite the old School) going towards Romiley. As I went on over the brow by the Cow and Calf (now closed) looking over Romiley towards Kinder Scout, I was reminded what a great view that was of the Derbyshire hills. I must take a photo of that view. My parents and older brothers came from Hyde before moving to Romiley in the 1930's. Hyde has really gone downhill, very scruffy! My wife Carol used to live at the top of Joel Lane, she went to Harrytown on Bredbury Green. I went up Werneth low on a lovely sunny day last week, great views over the Cheshire basin from there, could see the hills of Snowdonia and even see Anglesey in the distance. Looking the other way the hills of Derbyshire and down to Staffordshire. Everywhere looked great from up there! That's my morning ramblings done, all the best Pete H.

Yes, the clean air act made a big difference. As a kid spent many hours on Werneth Low ( could hardly see bottom of the hill then ) and later quite a bit of courting up there. Later played golf there and watched the cricket sometimes. Used to visit the area on a regular basis some years ago, buying in Manchester. Stayed with Dad overnight for a 2 day visit. Later after his death used to leave home about 1.00am Monday arrive Knutsford around 6.00am, breakfast then fight my way through Altrincham. By 3.00pm was on my way back to Cornwall. Couldn't do it now. Re the pre clean air days.. Around late fifties I worked in Stalybridge. On day no buses, it was so foggy. So walked home via Hyde, through the park . So filthy when I got home with soot hanging from my nose and ears. Amazing how we survived then, must have toughened us up somewhat.
Cheers Terry

That's Trevone where we live.. backwards
Hi Pete. Just come across your post again and as having a rest after 2 hrs lawn mowing thought I would pen a few things. Nice to hear good things re Dad. Yes he was into big band music and in his earlier days at The Exors played in a trio sometimes at the steelworks canteen which used to be on corner of Redhouse Lane opposite the shops and also at the Con club on George Lane.. That's where I got my lifelong love of jazz from and indeed played drums in a band all round the Manchester area almost up to the time we moved to Cornwall. Val got divorced from Graham Dyer and went off with new bloke to live in Nassau, Bahamas for few years ( he had worked at James Mills also ) you may remember him, called Kavanagh. That didn't last and she's had a few more since...lost count really. On the marriage stakes Val and I complete opposites. Odd really talking about Graham Dyer, I was recently on Google Earth looking at Bredbury and took a screen shot of the Dyer shop, going to send to Val! Oh about Dad, you would have known his working make Len Brickell who played football for Hyde Utd when they had a really good side for years in the Cheshire league. My god Bredbury has changed, when you consider the employment there was. Mills with over 2000, then Crosslands, Wallpaper Mfrs, Wards Hats. Something just come to mind. Do you remember Mr Partington who was the buyer at Exors James Mills? He lived on Victoria Avenue directly opposite the rear of our house on Newlyn Drive. I was the area sales manager for a number of steel mills in the Ductile Steels group based around Willenhall, Wolverhampton. I worked out of an office in Wilmslow and later Bramhall. Exors of James Mills became a good customer of mine, we supplied steel for the rail keys made over at the Ashton Road works. Amazing how things come back once you start writing! If you ever down this way, look us up. Best wishes Terry. enovert68@live.co.uk
