More about this scene
The lord of the manor, William Gossip, purchased land here with the view to owning a substantial but convenient house in this rural part of the West and North Yorkshire border. He commissioned the designs from the fashionable architect of the time, John Carr of York. Stone came from local quarries within a short distance from here, and even the clay for bricks was found on his land. The house was completed by 1756 - in the same year that William Gossip paid for renovations to the parish church.
