By the 1860s Bollington was thriving, but during the American Civil War the cotton towns of Lancashire, east Cheshire and north Derbyshire felt the effects of the Federal blockade of Confederate ports. Cotton workers experienced months of hardship and many were forced to seek parish relief. When this picture was taken there would still have been people in Bollington who remembered the cotton famine.
