More about this scene
Further east, the photographer looks west towards the pier along what was then known as Gloucester Parade, now The Esplanade. On the right is the Carlton Hotel which was the start of an ambitious project for a crescent over 600 feet long. The foundation stone was laid in 1880 by Lord William Pitt Lennox, but the project never got beyond the first four bays of the crescent curving away from the hotel. The pier opened in 1865; this view shows it before the Edwardian addition of buildings at its landward end.
