More about this scene
Ingatestone Hall was built in 1548 by Sir William Petre. The gateway was remodelled and given its turret in the 18th century: it boasts a one- handed clock and the Petres' motto ('Without God, Nothing'). The family were recusant Catholics, and there are two priest-holes concealed in the house. Queen Elizabeth came to stay here in 1561.
