More about this scene
The thatch to the right has gone, and so has the church spire; it has a square tower today. Beer had a substantial reputation as a smugglers' base in years gone by. One Jack Rattenbury, a native of the town, actually wrote a book in 1837 describing his activities - 'Memoirs of a Smuggler'.
