More about this scene

The original castle was built around 1068 on the site of an Anglo-Saxon fortification. Building continued under Henry I and Henry II after Arundel had become a royal fortress. It was badly damaged during the Civil War, rebuilt in the Gothic style during the Napoleonic period, and rebuilt yet again between 1890 and 1903.

A Selection of Memories from Arundel

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Arundel

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

This is my Grandfather Joseph Smith and my two Great Aunts, Kathleen and Josephine. He was about 12 in this picture. They lived yards from where this was taken in the lodge at Arundel Park gates. My great Grandfather, William, was a groom to the then Duke of Norfolk (Henry) and Great Granmother, Kate, was a domestic. I have spent many happy times in Arundel and continue to visit.
