More about this scene
The waterfalls of Stock Ghyll Force have been a major attraction to visitors to Ambleside for well over a century; this is a very early photograph of them. The waters of Stock Ghyll rise just below the summit of the Kirkstone Pass, north of the town, and plunge through this wooded gorge before joining the River Rothay and eventually entering Windermere.
