More about this scene
Aldborough, just one mile from Boroughbridge, stands on the site of the Roman station Isurium, and has a museum containing Roman remains. In this picture, children play round the old stone cross, said to commemorate the Battle of Boroughbridge. The carter has stopped to let the cameraman take the picture. Note that the girls all appear to be wearing smocks and hats.
