More about this scene
Now known as Church Terrace, this view shows the ironmonger's shop of Mr Barratt, later Barratt & Phillips. Not many modern retailers would display their stock on the pavement today - theft or prosecution for obstruction would surely follow! Further along is G W Gibbs & Sons, bootmakers, who still trade here today. Beyond the fine house, which is now an estate agent's, is the showroom of Crabtree & Son - by 1929 the business had been taken over by W H Johnson & Sons Ltd. Sandwiched between this and the 18th-century Duke's Head Inn, is the shop of Teed & Son, builders' merchants: among other things, they dealt with 'wireless instruments', advised on electric light (no charge!) and fitted and repaired bells.
