- Merrow, the Forge 1913
This photograph of Merrow forge in 1913, near Guildford in Surrey, shows the blacksmith plying his trade in what was still a village at the time the view was taken. The blacksmith’s workshop, along with the church, pub and local store, was an essential component of a village’s existence prior to the arrival of the internal combustion engine, but few places could have boasted such a magnificent structure as this, where the very entrance incorporates a giant horseshoe in its brickwork. By 1927, however, this enterprise had succumbed to the irresistible growth of the motorcar and had become a garage. All traces of this picturesque forge have now gone – the site is now occupied by a modern service station.
