More about this scene
This view was taken from the Town Hall, with the Market Cross in the foreground, a 33ft-high column dating from 1768. Beyond in the centre of the road is the original Shambles building, an enclosed market erected in 1825. It is claimed that Stockton has the widest High Street in England - a good example of early town planning! The wonderful historic façade of the shops on the left was unforgivably removed in 1970 for a new shopping development.
