More about this scene
Ramsgate is the third in the trinity of Thanet holiday resorts; its attractions would have been familiar to the young Princess Victoria, who as a small girl stayed in a house near the bandstand on the left of the picture, and played freely on the sands below. As Queen Empress, she died in the year this picture was taken. The Saint Cloud Hotel and the Granville Hotel, whose impressive colonnaded and balconied frontages face the sea, catered for the middle classes and their families.
