More about this scene
Here we see the Royal Exchange from the corner of Market Street and Cross Street. This, the third Exchange, opened in October 1874; it had been built in two stages, so that members could move from the old to the new without disrupting things too much. The words around the great dome in the centre of the building were: 'A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold'. This building had Manchester's Telephone Exchange on the top floor - the posts carrying each line can be seen on the roof.
