More about this scene
Even in the late 18th century there were ninety pits in the Forest, with a combined annual output of about 100,000 tons of coal. By the 1860s annual output had risen to about 500,000 tons, though 350,000 tons of this was being mined at ten large collieries. At the beginning of the 20th century the combined output of all Gloucestershire pits was about 1.5 million tons.
