More about this scene
Ilfracombe's growth was helped by the building of the Barnstaple turnpike and a new pier, but neglect of other amenities led to a cholera epidemic, which swept the town in 1849. To counter the threat to public health a new sewage works was built in 1853 and a reservoir in 1866, just in time for the arrival in 1874 of the railway; after this, Ilfracombe's expansion really took off.
