100 Years Ago: Herbert William Nunn

A Memory of Carlton Colville.

Herbert William Nunn, born Carlton Colville, 1888; killed in action 13 November 1916 was the fiance of my mother's neighbour of 50 years. Her name was Ethel Lilly, and she lived in Nottingham, the family taking their holidays in Lowestoft..
After Herbert was killed, Ethel lived with her parents, and then alone until in her 80s she married a fellow Pensioners' Club member! When she died, her photos and personal items were offered to my mother, her one remaining niece wanted nothing like that. I have kept them all myself for many many years, and now it is exactly 100 years since she heard that Herbert had been killed in action.
A contact in Australia who was researching the Nunn family added him to a website. I don't think he had any close family. I have always regarded him as my own family, as Ethel was very good to me when I was a child. I have a couple of photos of him; on the back of one Ethel has written, in pencil, about the notification of his death.

Always remembered. I hope someone in Carlton Colville does as well.
