Forbear House

A Memory of Askett.

I am writing here to add a kind of memory, but also to ask for any information about a certain family connection to Askett.

In January 1941 in Fulham, London, my mum's mother Ivy Shaw, died as a result of falling down the stairs during the blackout. My mum Jill Shaw, was only 16 months old at the time and was almost immediately given into the care of Miss Woods of Forbear House, Askett, Princes Risborough by her father, Henry Shaw, until he could sort out things at home. It was a children's home/boarding nursery with about 20 children of ages 2-11 as I have learned from the letters her father sent to her grandmother.

So my mother was definitely in Askett during early part of 1941 at least but we don't know for how long. Her father married again in August 1941 and we know that the new wife didn't want my mother and at some point she was removed from the family home, around the age of 5-6 years, but we aren't not sure when she left Forbear House.

Would anyone be able to tell me more about Forbear House, I have done some internet searches but not found anything as of yet.

with gratitude,

Lisa Berkshire

Hi Lisa,
I know nothing of Forbear House but a little about Gertrude.
She was born 17th March 1914 and at the beginning of the 2nd World War was working as a nurse in the Isolation Hospital in Scunthorpe. She at some stage moved to Forbear House in Askett and then rented a property in Monks Risborough - "Churchways" which she in fact purchased on 20th July 1943 for the princely sum of £300. She went on to sell Churchways a little over 2 years later for £1100! In the documentation I have her surname is given as Wood rather than Woods.
